Nueva etapa, nuevos horizontes

Estimados lectores,

Ya llevamos un año desde que AEBM decidió aventurarse a publicar una revista de imágenes del Laboratorio Clínico. Laboratory Medicine at a glance publica su cuarto volumen y ante todo queremos agradecer el apoyo y la acogida que ha tenido dentro de nuestro ámbito. Han sido muchos los trabajos que hemos recibido y los autores que se han volcado para hacer de ésta una revista interesante e innovadora, que permite mostrar el lado más “visual” del Laboratorio Clínico, muchas veces abocado a no mostrar más que cifras y unidades.

PARASITOSIS OF A TRAVELLER RETURNING FROM A TROPICAL ZONE

PARASITOSIS EN UN VIAJERO QUE REGRESA DE ZONA TROPICAL
The authors present an image composition in which, the lower right is a 400X fresh stool examination, where an elongated egg of about 80x45 μm without vitelline membrane, with a very irregular and mamelonated thin covering and cytoplasmic mass with amorphous and refracting granules is showed, being identified as an infertile egg of Ascaris lumbricoides. In the upper part of the image, an adult nematode of slightly pinkish color, about 20 cm long, 4 mm wide and with a slightly curved caudal end (left lower part) is presented, being identified as an adult male of Ascaris lumbricoides.

LIBRARY GENERATION THROUGH RIBOSOMAL RNA 16S GENE AMPLIFICATION FOR DETERMINING MICROBIOTA COMPOSITION

CREACIÓN DE LIBRERÍAS MEDIANTE AMPLIFICACIÓN DEL ARN RIBOSOMAL 16S PARA LA CARACTERIZACIÓN DE LA MICROBIOTA
Many metagenomic studies are aimed at determining the bacterial composition in a specific type of sample. This is usually performed by next-generation sequencing analysis of the data obtained from libraries created by PCR amplification of the prokaryotic 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene. This gene has a length of 1542 base pairs and it is composed by nine variable regions and interspaced by more conserved regions. The amplification of one or two of these variable regions of the 16S rRNA gene is a common approach employed in the phylogenetic identification of hundreds of species that are present in the human microbiota1.

ACANTHAMOEBA KERATITIS IN CONTACT LENS WEARER

QUERATITIS POR ACANTHAMOEBA SPP. EN PACIENTE USUARIO DE LENTES DE CONTACTO
The image belongs to a 35 year old woman with pain in the left eye. Acanthamoeba spp. cyts can be seen when we examine the contact lenses solution (optical microscope 100x with methylene blue staining). On a slide, a homogenous suspension is made between contact lenses solution and methylene blue. This method allows you to know the protozoa, based on morphological characteristics. It can be seen Acanthamoeba spp. cyst with a double cell wall. The outside wall is called ectocisto, thin and wavy, and inside one is called endocisto, rounded.

DIAGNOSIS OF LOIASIS IN A GIRL WITH EOSINOPHILIA

DIAGNOSTICO DE LOIASIS EN NIÑA CON EOSINOFILIA
We report a case of a 9-year-old girl referred to the emergency department from her primary care pediatrician for eye discomfort. Her mother was diagnosed of filariasis by Loa loa in her pregnancy, although she did not report follow-up. The ophthalmologist does not detect any pathological findings at ocular level. 

Basic biochemistry and hemogram were required for emergency laboratory. Eosinophilia (1.18 x 103/μL) called attention to laboratory, and after reviewing the medical history and maternal backgroun, decides to perform a search for the Loa loa parasite.
